Alphabet of natural detoxifiers

AlphabetOfDetoxifiersModern human bodies in much of the world are notoriously overloaded with acidic food, and under nourished with alkaline food. The acidic load is too much for the digestive system and the liver to  process adequately and rid the body of poisonous toxins. This can and eventually does lead to an alphabet soup of discomforts, ailments and serious diseases.

But there are many nutritious detoxifying foods in the ‘alphabet’ and it’s amazing what a day or two of dieting on only those foods will do for your well-being. Your body will love you.

If you feel like you can’t handle two days or only one on a diet of apples, beets, Brazil nuts, cabbage, garlic, lemons, pineapple etc., try substituting some of the following foods for the acid-making food most of us consume too much of.

* Artichokes, for example, are one of the most  powerful natural liver aids. A well-functioning liver is necessary for efficient detoxification.

* Apples are loaded with nutrients–fiber, minerals, vitamins and phytochemicals important for detox. Try to eat organic apples, as conventionally grown apples are among the top 12 crops containing pesticides that interfere with valuable nutrients. Organic apples have a 15 to 20 percent higher antioxidant capacity.

* Almonds are the best nut source of vitamin E, containing ‘alpha-tocopherol,’ the form of E the body likes best. Almonds are also full of calcium, magnesium, fiber and a form of useable protein that helps remove impurities from the bowels.

* Asparagus helps with liver drainage by filtering out toxins, in addition it contains many other nutrients that help prevent cancer and heart disease.

* Avocados are a ‘wonder fruit’ packed with antioxidants and omega-3, the ‘good’ fat that oils the engine of your body rather than clogging it up.

* Beets are considered by some experts to be the king of all food blood purifiers and liver cleansers. This nutritious vegetable boosts energy and helps lower blood pressure.

* Brazil nuts are packed with selenium, the key to flushing mercury and other toxins out of the body.

* Broccoli specifically works with enzymes in the liver to convert persistent toxins into a substance the body can eliminate.

* Cabbage is an excellent liver cleanser, helping to remove toxins. It contains sulfur, which is essential in breaking down chemicals for removal from the body.

* Garlic is a virtual miracle medicine that boosts the immune system, lowers blood pressure, is loaded with antibiotic properties and contains even more sulfur than cabbage.

* Lemons are a powerful detoxifier, stimulating the release of enzymes and converting toxins into a water-soluble form easily excreted. Drink a glass of alkaline-forming lemon water first thing in the morning to help balance the acidity of foods consumed. Lemons also contain more than 20 anti-cancer compounds.

* Pineapple (fresh only) is rich in bromain, a digestive enzyme that helps clean the colon and improve digestion.

* Tumeric, with its active ingredient curcumin, is used extensively in Ayurvedic medicine to treat liver and digestive disorders. This Indian spice can be added to many tasty dishes.

Herbs that are especially effective in detox efforts are basil, cilantro and parsley.
