Attack diabetes with rosemary and oregano

Well, maybe those two historic and popular herbs, rosemary and oregano,  are not the ‘instant cure’ so many people seek  today, but maybe they are more of a magic health bullet than we think!

Modern science has just ‘discovered’ that those two ancient herbs are packed with healthful compounds, and now lab tests show they could work in much the same way to prevent and treat diabetes  as prescription anti-diabetic medication (without the side effects).

In the new study conducted by the American Chemical Society(ACS) and published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, researchers discovered that unique polyphenols and flavonoids contained in oregano and rosemary inhibit the enzyme dipeptidyl peptidase IV that promotes the secretion of insulin.

Diabetes has increased by nearly 200 percent in Western populations over the last decades and is rapidly increasing in developing cultures with access to industrial food.

Researchers tested four different herbs, both greenhouse-grown and dried commercial versions, for their ability to inhibit the diabetes- promoting enzyme, which is also the target of a prescription drug for the disease. They found that greenhouse herbs contained more polyphenols and flavonoids compared to the equivalent commercial herbs.

However, the commercial dried extracts worked just as well to lower blood sugar.

The herbs are also potent sources of gallic acid, which contains anti-fungal, anti-viral and chemopreventive properties. In addition, researchers found during their tests that the herb rosemary alleviates age-related cognitive decline by reducing oxidative stress in the part of the brain that controls memory and learning.

Researcher and lead author of the ACS study, Elvira Gonzalez de Mejia, said that in some cases diabetes is controlled through diet and exercise. But…many lack the discipline to go that route, so she sees great promise in further exploration of the medicinal compounds found in simple herbs as a less expensive and more natural treatment for diabetes.

Oregano oil and other herbal extracts have been used as medicine in the natural health field for many years, and can be obtained in health food stores. Or….we could grow our own little herb plot and get our medicine straight from the plant– without the middleman.
