Baking soda–the cheapest medicine in your home

BakingSodaBaking soda, or sodium bicarbonate, has been used as medicine since the time of ancient Egypt where it was harvested from dry lake beds.

However, it was not until 1846 in New York that it became the commercial product so familiar to every household today.

Many people are confused about the difference between baking soda and baking powder, and some have concerns that baking soda may contain aluminum. It does not. Baking soda is 100 percent sodium bicarbonate.

Baking soda and baking powder are both leavening agents, but many baking POWDER labels typically will state that the contents are 30 percent sodium bicarbonate, 5 to 12 percent monocalcium phosphate and 21 to 26 percent sodium aluminum sulfate.

Be sure you look for one that says aluminum-free.

Baking SODA is actually one of the least expensive medicines in the world.  Its medicinal power derives from the fact that it is an alkaline substance which helps keep the body pH at a healthy range of 7.35 to 7.45.

A host of  health problems begin with the acidic Standard American Diet which wreaks havoc on our body pH balance.

For instance:

* Cancer—Keep in mind that cancer cells thrive in an acidic environment… and fail to thrive in an alkaline environment.  A growing body of medical research indicates that by increasing the alkalinity of tumors by ingestion of sodium bicarbonate, metastasis is inhibited or stopped.

* Kidney disease—British researchers treated patients with advanced kidney disease and metabolic acidosis with oral sodium bicarbonate along with their usual treatment, and over the course of two years slowed the rate of decline by two-thirds. At the end of the study only 6.5 percent of the patients required dialysis compared to 33 percent in the control group.

That innocuous little box so easy to overlook in your kitchen pantry has many amazing qualities that eliminate the need for expensive over-the-counter medicines for more minor problems. There are hundreds of uses for baking soda. But we’ll just name a few.

* Colds and flu—Dissolve 1/2 teaspoon of soda in a little water and drink several times a day.

* Acid Reflux, indigestion, heartburn—Forget the Tums. Mix half a teaspoon of soda in half a glass of water.

* Skin irritations—Make a paste of soda and a little water and apply to sunburn, insect bites and rashes and itching from poison oak or ivy. A half cup of soda in bathwater relieve itching and irritation in patients with psoriasis.

* Deoderant—Again, make a paste with soda and water and dab on your feet and under your arms.

Do your own research on the importance of a balanced pH and be able to ask intelligent questions when you discuss health problems big and small with your physician. Best of all, learn and do what you can to prevent the problems in the first place!

In addition, baking soda is a great cleaning product. Your family’s health would benefit by replacing most chemical cleaning products with baking soda and vinegar.
