Crony capitalism at the EPA?

epasignIs there crony capitalism at the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency)?

The Alliance for Natural Health suggests that the agency charged with protecting our health may be heavily influenced by industry lobbyists.

Some months ago, the EPA released a draft report on the carcinogenic potential of glyphosate, the active ingredient of Monsanto’s Roundup pesticide.

A meeting was scheduled with a panel of scientists who would discuss the available data on glyphosate and its potential  to cause cancer.

Earlier the World Health Organization (WHO) had stated that studies determined that glyphosate was probably carcinogenic. The studies were conducted by the International Agency for Research on Cancer.

But the meeting promised by the EPA never happened!

The meeting was postponed, the agency said, because it was seeking additional experts in order to have a “more robust review of the data.”

But behind the scenes it appeared that biotech was going all out to stop the EPA review.

CropLife America, the trade group for the nation’s largest biotech and pesticide manufacturers aggressively objected to the government reviewing cancer data, assuring the EPA that there was no need to discuss the issue at all.

CropLife also called for the removal of any scientist on the panel who has “publicly expressed an opinion regarding the carcinogenicity of glyphosate.” It even offered the names of the EPA scientists that should be removed in the interests of “impartiality.”

Apparently, noted the Alliance for Natural Health, the intent was  to pack the panel with ‘puppets’ who would toe the industry’s line.

In addition, Rep. Lamar Smith (R-TX) wrote a letter to EPA head Gina McCarthy, expressing concern that certain EPA scientists involved in the international research on cancer might compromise the agency’s ability to “fairly assess glyphosate based on sound science.”

In other words, the EPA and other scientists concluded that glyphosate was linked to cancer, but a congressman says this makes the scientists unable to assess the science fairly!

Does this sound like crony capitalism at the EPA?

Since Roundup was introduced in 1996, global use has increased 15-fold. On top of this, farmers use at least 383 million MORE pounds of pesticides and herbicides overall because of Roundup-ready crops genetically manipulated to withstand the potent glyphosate!

Along with the increasing deadly chemicals in our society, cancer rates continue to rise. (There are undoubtedly a number of reasons for this—including heavy pesticide use.)

And in 2013 the EPA actually RAISED the permitted toxicity levels, saying Roundup was “safe,” an additional indication that there just might be crony capitalism at the EPA.

President-Elect Trump claimed that he was going to put an end to (or at least inhibit) crony capitalism. We’ll see.

Very interesting that he has appointed Mike Pompeo (R-Kans), avid biotech supporter who introduced the ‘dark act, as head of the CIA.

Since government agencies and Congress have seemed to be in a lobbyist-induced coma about health issues, Alliance for Natural Health asks that we contact our congressman to support real analysis of glyphosate.
