Dangerous effects of prolonged antacid use

ProlongedAntacidUseAlthough the alternative health press has long warned about the hidden dangers of prolonged antacid use, the warnings have finally hit the mainstream press.

The Week magazine (12/27/13) reported that an examination of the records of 26,000 patients at Kaiser Permanente Clinics between 1997 and 2011 found that those who took a class of drugs known as proton pump inhibitors–sold over the counter as Prilosec, Prevacid, and Nexium–for two years or more had a 65 percent much higher than normal risk of vitamin B-12 deficiency. Those who took the acid-inhibiting drugs called histamine-2 receptor antagonists such as Pepcid and Zantac also experienced increased risk, though somewhat less than the proton pump inhibitors.

Vitamin B-12 is an essential nutrient for the healthy functioning of every single cell in the body, and a deficiency, when not corrected, can and does contribute to a host of health problems including depression, dementia, nerve damage, osteoporosis (see previous article on osteoporosis and B-12 deficiency on this page), and many others.

Popping pills such as Tums and all the others to relieve heartburn, gas and acid stomach is so common today that most people think nothing of it, but in nearly all cases those discomforts that can lead to serious health problems are caused by the Standard American Diet (acidic) and lifestyle– and are entirely preventable.

Eat more vegetables, especially nutritious raw vegetables that activate the enzymes which are natural aids to effective digestion.

Or, if you want to diminish or eliminate your use of pills, try natural remedies for heartburn, such as eating a banana, dissolving a little baking soda in some water, having a cup of chamomile or ginger tea,  drinking a couple teaspoons of apple cider vinegar in water, or swallowing a bit of aloe vera juice.

Just remember that today’s Standard American Diet combined with chemical medicines–are bad medicine for the natural maintenance and restorative functioning of the body.
