Foods that help vital liver functions

The liver breaks down proteins and fats, provides enzyme activation, stores vitamins and minerals and promotes detoxification, purification and excretion. While liver transplants and partial transplants are possible, such actions involve major surgery that we don’t want to subject the body to if it can be avoided.

We live in a polluted era and consume toxic, liver-damaging foods loaded with chemical additives , so never has good performance from the liver been more important than today.

In order to counteract environmental and food pollutants that we can’t avoid, it’s worthwhile to know about some special  healthy foods that support the liver–and to include them in the family diet. Following is a list of special foods and the benefits they provide for the liver:

* Garlic–Garlic has been used as flavoring and medicine for eons, and has long been recognized as a topnotch food medicine to treat many dysfunctions of the body. It activates liver enzymes to help the body flush toxins, and contains high amounts of allicin and selenium that aid in this cleansing.

* Beets and carrots–These vegetables are loaded with plant flavonoids and beta-carotene that stimulate and improve the overall function of the liver.

* Avocados–Avocados help the body to produce natural glutathione, a compound necessary for the body to be able to cleanse harmful toxins.

* Olive oil (and hemp and flaxseed oil)–produce a lipid base that sucks up damaging toxins.

* Cruciferous vegetables–Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage are powerful aids in flushing out carcinogens.

* Lemons and limes–These citrus fruits are very high in vitamin C, which aids the body in synthesizing toxins into substances that can be absorbed by water. A glass of water first thing in the morning with the juice of a lemon or lime in it will help liver function all day.

* Leafy, green vegetables–Have these chlorophyll-loaded vegetables raw, cooked, or juiced every day. They literally slurp up toxins from the blood stream, neutralizing heavy metals, chemicals and pesticides.

* Green tea–Green tea is said to be the liver-loving beverage, as it is full of the plant antioxidants-catechins-studied and known to support and assist liver function.

Other liver-supporting foods are apples (organic) and grapefruit.

By making nutritious whole food the primary part of our daily diet, we can take big strides in avoiding not only liver problems, but all the chronic diseases that plague so many people today.
