The Land of the Drugged

Here are a few “State of the Union” prescription drug facts you probably won’t hear from President Obama:

* The Wall Street Journal says more than 25 percent of U.S. kids and teens take prescription drugs on a regular basis.

* A recent study found that one out of five adult Americans are taking at least one drug for ‘psychiatric’ or ‘behavioral’ disorders.

*The percentage of women taking antidepressants in the U.S. is higher than any country in the world.

* Children in the U.S. are three times more likely to be prescribed antidepressants than children in Europe.

* According to the Los Angeles Times, “Drug fatalities more than doubled among teens and young adults between 2000 and 2008. Deaths more than tripled among people aged 50 to 69. In sheer numbers, the death toll is highest among people in their 40s.

* A Government Accountability Office report discovered that about one-third of all foster children in the U.S. are on at least one psychiatric drug. In Texas, foster children were 53 times more likely to be prescribed five or more psychiatric medicines at the same time than non-foster children. In Massachussetts they were 19 times more likely. In Michigan, 15 times, 13 times in Oregon.

* Tens of billions of dollars are spent annually in the U.S. for pharmaceutical marketing.

* But we’re NUMBER 1 in more than prescription drug use. We’re also number one in illegal drug use.

But don’t worry. We have plenty of local and federal government drug warriors on LEGAL drugs out there nabbing the ILLEGAL drug users.
