Toxic chemicals found in many children’s multivitamins

ChemicalsThe Big Labs of Big Food and Big Pharma have been extremely inventive in devising formulas that enable them to mazimize profits while selling their products at a reasonable price.

But buying the cheapest product may not always be such a bargain for your health and the health of your children.

Many conscientious parents faithfully give their children a daily multivitamin such as Bayer’s Flintstone children’s vitamin, which is heavily marketed on TV.

Unfortunately, many parents believe the commercials without questioning what those vitamins contain.

They would likely be shocked to know that many cheap children’s vitamins on the market contain aspartame, genetically modified organisms and other harmful chemicals. Here are a few such ingredients routinely found in children’s vitamins:

Aspartame is a synthetic sugar used in diet sodas and thousands of other products—including some children’s vitamins. Aspartame has recently been widely discredited by numerous studies that revealed it damages the brain by leaving traces of methanol in the blood by converting to toxic methanol and formaldehyde in the body. But it is still used in food and vitamin manufacturing.

Sorbitol is another synthetic sugar substitute, and has been linked to gastrointestinal disturbances, including irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

Cupric oxide is listed as a ‘hazardous substance’ in the European Union’s Dangerous Substances Directive. But it is still used in the U.S.

Ferrous fumarate is a substitute for natural iron but can easily reach dangerous levels of toxicity in the body. There is a clear warning about the danger of toxicity from ferrous fumarate on the Flintstone website.

Hydrogenated soybean oil is yet another additive used in many products, but some scientists maintain that any product marketed to children that contains this ingredient— is the height of irresponsibility! Hydrogenated soybean oil is semi-synthetic fatty acids that lodge in the body’s tissues, and has been linked to dozens of harmful health effects—from coronary artery disease to cancer and fatty liver disease.

Keep in mind that children’s growing bodies and brains are very vulnerable to foreign, often harmful substances. So do your research and provide only vitamins and minerals derived from whole and natural ingredients.
