U.S. consumes 37% of the world’s pharmaceutical drugs

Worldwide pharmaceutical sales are now well over $800 billion per year. And sadly, the U.S., with only 4% of the world’s population, consumes 37% of these drugs.

The U.S. also leads the world in the consumption of illegal drugs, but it is the so-called “legal” pharmaceuticals that cause over 100,000 deaths per year.

Sadly, much of this abuse of pharmaceuticals could be eliminated with education regarding the alternatives available  for addressing health issues. A moderate view to pharmaceuticals would be to acknowledge that they do save lives and are necessary for emergency care… but realizing that long-term use for chronic issues results in an astounding death rate.
